Mount Luigi di Savoia is ranked as the fourth highest mountain in Uganda and the sixth highest in Africa. Its highest peak, Sella, rises to 4,637 meters above sea level. Unlike other mountains in the Rwenzori range, it was never climbed by the Duke of Abruzzi, though he still named it. The Duke was a famous mountaineer who made the first ascent of Mount Elias in 1897. He also climbed high on K2 in the Karakoram and almost reached Bride Peak on Chogolisa. Besides his climbing achievements, he was a military hero known for saving fellow soldiers. In his later years, he lived in Ethiopia, where many people admired him.
This mountain is home to several peaks, including Stairs Peak at 4,545 meters and Weismann at 4,620 meters. Many hikers use the Freshfield Pass to reach the northern summit. It is the shortest of the six central mountains, making it easier to climb and reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
Hiking here can be combined with birdwatching. Along the trails, you can see many bird species. To enjoy this, stay calm and avoid making noise, as birds are very sensitive. Carry a camera but avoid flash. A birding guide can lead you to the best spots and explain about the different species you see. This makes your adventure more memorable.
After a long day of hiking, there are nearby accommodations to suit all budgets. You can choose from budget, midrange, or luxury lodges. All of them provide good services, including clean rooms, laundry, customer care, secure parking, and tight security. Some also offer free Wi-Fi, though network strength may vary. If the internet is weak, you can buy data bundles from MTN or Airtel. For better planning and to save time, your tour operator will always be available to guide you.
Visit Mount Luigi di Savoia for its peaks, wildlife, and the many stories that surround it.
