Hunwick’s Camp on Mount Rwenzori – Trekking & Nature Guide

The Afro-alpine zone of Mount Rwenzori is home to Hunwick’s Camp, named after the director of Rwenzori Trekking Services. The journey to this camp begins at about 1450 meters and takes you through bamboo thickets, low shrubs, flowers, mushrooms, and moss- and lichen-covered vines hanging from tall trees. These sights attract many photographers.

The first stop is Sine Camp, which sits between large forest trees on a ridge. From here, you can see the Afro-montane forest and waterfalls down the slope.

At 8:30 am, the trek continues to Mutinda Camp through the Bamboo-Mimulopsis zone, a steep and difficult section, especially during the rainy season when it becomes muddy and slippery.

After reaching Kalalama Camp in the heather zone, hikers usually take a cup of tea and rest before moving on to Mutinda Camp. The trail here winds over small knolls along a ridge, then descends into a valley, crossing small moss-covered streams and waterfalls. The next day, the journey continues to Bugata Camp, which leads the way to Hunwick’s Camp.

Hunwick’s Camp is a comfortable stop that offers wide views of the mountains. It lies in an area rich with plants, wildlife, and challenging terrain that requires determined hikers.

Along the way, you may see many animals. These include carnivores, herbivores, and primates such as blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and chimpanzees.

Do not approach primates without your guide, as they can attack if they feel threatened. Herbivores are usually calm, but some are very large and can be dangerous if disturbed. Birds also fill the area, and hikers often spot turacos and sunbirds along the trail.

Hunwick’s Camp is a good choice for hikers and nature lovers. Book your trek and experience it for yourself.
