Mountains of the Moon

The highest peak is Margherita, which remains snow-capped throughout the year. If you plan to trek, it is best to wake up as early as 4:00 am before the glaciers melt, as this makes hiking easier.

Rwenzori is also called Rwenjura
The name “Rwenjura” comes from the Rukonzo language, meaning “rain maker.” This is because the mountain is always misty and receives heavy rainfall, which can make trekking difficult with muddy and slippery grounds.
Water from the mountains flows into different rivers, providing water for both domestic and industrial use. During sunny days, the melting glaciers increase the flow of River Mubuku, which helps in generating hydroelectric power for homes and industries.
The mountains have six major peaks
While many people only know Margherita as the highest peak, the Rwenzori range has five other peaks: Mount Speke, Mount Baker, Mount Emin, Mount Gessi, and Mount Luigi di Savoia.
To access these peaks, hikers follow routes planned by the park authorities to ensure safety. Some routes take fewer days, such as 8-day hikes, for visitors who may not reach the highest summit.
Only mountain in East Africa not formed by volcanicity
Unlike other mountains in East Africa, Rwenzori is not volcanic and will never erupt. Instead, it is a block mountain formed by faulting. Snow remains on its peaks all year round.
The mountain is located in southwestern Uganda, in Kasese District, and borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is home to Virunga National Park.
