Mount Gessi Uganda - Trekking Guide to the Rwenzori Northern Peaks

Close to Mount Emin, you will find Mount Gessi in the northern circuit. It was named after the Italian explorer Romulo Gessi, who helped many explorers and people understand Africa’s lands better. Naming this peak after him was a way to honor his work.

Mount Gessi has two main peaks called Lolanda and Bottego. It stands in a narrow canyon with cottages and walkways along the route on both the Uganda and Congo sides. However, the most recommended starting point is from the Congo side because it is shorter and more flexible compared to the Uganda routes.

The trek usually begins in Mugusu Valley with a short briefing, where you are told what to do and what to avoid. From there, you set off with local guides and porters who make sure you do not get lost. The climb passes through thick forest to Roccato Pass, where you can rest after walking through dense trees and rock slabs. From here, the trail continues to the summit, dividing between the two peaks, which many believe were once covered by melting glaciers.

Mount Gessi stands at 15,018 feet and is separated from Mount Emin by a short valley. Together with other peaks, it makes up the northern triangle of the six main mountains in the Rwenzori region. The mountain stretches along a rocky north-south ridge, with the upper peak heading south. Small huts along the route provide rest stops for hikers. Trails from both Uganda and Congo meet here, giving different access points for trekking.

Hikers are advised to carry a first aid kit for minor injuries, wear earth-colored clothes to avoid attracting insects, and use insect repellent. You should also pack bottled water and snacks, especially if you will spend long hours without reaching a camp.

The descent is always easier and faster than climbing up, which is why it is best to book comfortable accommodation for rest after your trek. Options include lodges and hotels around Kasese town or near the Rwenzori Mountains, such as Elephant Plains Lodge and Rwenzori International Hotel.

Mount Gessi is a unique experience and should be on your safari list when visiting Uganda.
