January is usually a busy month for workers, but you can escape the noise by visiting Mountain Rwenzori. It is full of wonders ranging from landscapes, vegetation, nearby accommodations, adventurous activities, and different wild species. During the dry January season, the park becomes a dream for visitors with many activities available, including hiking to Margherita Peak, which is loved by trekkers.
The routes leading to most tourist attractions are dry, making them easier to access compared to the wet months when the ground is muddy and slippery. In dry months, prices are usually high or moderate because many visitors come, and more services are needed. This is why some tourists choose to visit in the rainy season when it is cheaper.
The skies are clear in January, giving visitors good views through binoculars or from raised platforms. You can enjoy looking down the slopes and watching different bird species as they fly in search of food and shade. This creates a calm and colorful safari experience.
When visiting, you are advised to pack light clothes, insect repellent, bottled water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a sweater because nights are cold. Also carry a waterproof bag, personal essentials, travel documents, safari hats, and binoculars. It is important to book early since many people come during the dry months.
Accommodation options are both inside and near the Rwenzori Mountains, ranging from budget, midrange to luxury. Your tour operator can guide you on the best choice depending on your budget. Some of these include Mihunga Lodge, Ruboni Community Camp, Equator Snow Geo Lodge, Elephant Plains Lodge, Rwenzori International Hotel, Tropical Savannah Guest House, Hotel Margherita, Ruboni Turaco View Camp, Nyabitaba Hut, John Matte Hut at 3,505 meters, Bujuku Hut, Elena Hut, Kitandara Hut, and Guyeoman Hut, also at 3,505 meters above sea level.
These huts are mostly used by hikers for resting. If your group is big, you may be asked to share a hut and equipment. Always follow the guide’s instructions for your safety.
