Ruboni Community Tours in the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda

The Ruboni community are known as the keepers of the Rwenzori Mountains. They have lived in this area for centuries, depending on the forest for their survival. Herbalists in the community get medicine from leaves, stems, roots, and other plants.

Visitors can tour this community during a nature walk. Along the way, you will see locals carrying out their daily activities such as looking after animals, farming, cooking, or fetching water. If you are interested, you can join in these cultural experiences.

Filming or taking photos should only be done after asking permission from the locals. During the walk, you can also enjoy listening to elders tell stories, often while sharing local drinks sipped through traditional straws or offered in bottles. The surrounding environment is filled with birds, butterflies, wild animals, primates, and beautiful landscapes, adding to the experience.

The Bakonzo people live in Ruboni and believe in a god who lives high in the mountains. For this reason, many of them never climb to the summit but instead show their respect by preserving their culture.

They have given names to many of the peaks and mountains, including Rwenzori, which they call “Rwenzuru,” a word in Rukonzo meaning “rain maker.”

Through the efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, locals have been educated about the importance of tourism. Many now work as porters, guides, or in nearby lodges such as Ruboni Community Camp, a budget place that reflects Ugandan culture and traditions. Visitors staying here get a true experience of village life.

During your visit, you will also meet elders who share ancient traditions of the Bakonzo people. Before you leave, you can visit the blacksmith of the village, who makes knives, pangas, hoes, and other tools by hand. This adds even more value to the trip.

Spending time with the Ruboni community is an unforgettable part of a tour to the Rwenzori Mountains. Do not miss the chance to meet them.
