Caves of Mount Rwenzori – Exploring Kilembe, Kitum & Skull Cave

Caves of Mount Rwenzori - Exploring Kilembe, Kitum & Skull Cave

The caves of the Mountains of the Moon are found at different altitudes, and some are filled with bats and cobwebs, showing the raw beauty of nature. The journey to the caves usually begins at Nyakalengija, where you meet guides and porters who accompany you through the rocky trails.

Your first resting place is Nyabitaba Camp, standing at 2,650 meters above sea level. After resting, you continue through local villages and paths covered with elephant grass leading to River Mubuku, an important water source for nearby communities and industries. You will also pass River Mahoma, where you stop for dinner and rest.

The next morning, the trek continues to John Matte Camp. To reach it, you cross the Kurtshuffer Bridge over Rivers Bujuku and Mubuku, passing through the bamboo forest. After resting at John Matte Camp, the journey moves on to Bukurungu Rock Shelter, where you can set up tents for the night.

From here, you continue to Bukurungu Camp in the heather zone, where it is possible to see wildlife such as the Rwenzori red duiker and rock hyrax.

The climb to Portal Peak and Peak Cagni follows, involving steep rocks and demanding trails that require strong hiking boots. The effort is rewarded with views of the slopes, mist, and surrounding landscapes. After this, you descend to Bigo Camp for a meal and overnight stay.

The adventure continues to Skull Cave Rock Shelter, which is harder to reach but rewarding, with nearby views of the caves surrounded by plants such as the Rwenzori giant lobelia and everlasting flowers.

It is best to visit the caves during the dry season when paths are accessible. The wet season brings heavy rains that make hiking difficult. Some of the caves on Mount Rwenzori include Kilembe Cave and Kitum Cave, both known for their unique walls and the wildlife that lives inside them.

Explore the remarkable caves of Mount Rwenzori during the dry season for a safe and memorable adventure.
