Trekker’s Hostel Kilembe is a popular place for guests going to and from the mountain ranges. It sits at an elevation of 1,450 meters and offers good accommodation options such as dormitories, double rooms, single rooms, and camping. Many travelers enjoy staying here, especially in the dry season, as it gives them a chance to connect with nature and make new friends. Some rooms have shared bathrooms in restored miner’s houses. Though a bit old with worn-out floors, they are well cleaned and suitable for guests.
The hostel is located in Kyanjuki village, Kilembe, about 12 kilometers from Kasese. From the decorated windows of the rooms, you can see the shining “Mountains of the Moon,” making you excited for the next day’s adventure. Before setting off for activities in the mountains, the hostel serves a filling meal and can also prepare lunch or dinner depending on when you return. The menu includes T-bone steaks, pasta, and vegetarian options, ensuring that everyone is catered for.
During the wet season, especially when heavy rains and thunderstorms are common, guests are advised not to hike in the mountains as the trails become slippery and muddy. Instead, the hostel organizes entertainment such as cultural performances with singing, dancing, and acting, giving visitors a memorable experience. When the rain stops, guided village walks are arranged, allowing guests to interact with local people. Boots are recommended because of the mud, and a raincoat is useful to stay dry.
Trekkers’ Hostel is a budget lodge surrounded by green vegetation and cool weather, making it a good base for those planning to climb the mountains. Hikes usually start at 8:30 am but can be arranged to suit your schedule. Rwenzori Mountains National Park is home to more than 70 mammals, including six species found only in the Albertine Rift, as well as many birds, primates, and reptiles.
