Mount Baker Uganda – Hiking Kiyanja Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains

Mount Baker Uganda - Hiking Kiyanja Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains

Mount Baker is the fifth highest peak in Africa. Locally it is called Kayanja, and its highest point is Edward Peak, which is rocky and sharp in nature. Many explorers have attempted this mountain. The first recorded climb was in 1906 by Austrian mountaineer Rudolf Grauer, who was joined by two British missionaries, H.E. Maddox and H.W. Tegart. In the same year, during February and April, an English expedition with Alexander F.R. Wollaston, Richard Bowen Woosnam, and Douglas Carruthers also made attempts.

The first successful climb to the summit was made by the Duke of Abruzzi, who later also climbed the other five highest peaks in the Rwenzori Mountains. The mountain’s local name, Kiyanja, was given by the Bakonzo people and is still used today. In June 1891, another expedition observed the peak and named it either Semper or Ngemwimbi, but Abruzzi later renamed it after Samuel Baker, a 19th-century British explorer who was the first European to see and visit Lake Albert.

The Rwenzori Mountains, including Mount Baker, were formed about three million years ago through faulting during the late Pliocene era. The rocks here include gneiss, amphibolite, granite, and quartzite, which attract geologists and travelers from around the world.

Hiking to Mount Baker usually starts from Kilembe, where you pass through different zones until you reach the peak. Hikers are advised to eat well, especially first-timers, to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. You should never separate from your guide, even if you have hiked before, because the terrain is wide and slippery, and accidents can happen. Hiking here is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and fees are charged. If you plan to film or use a drone, you must first buy a permit and get approval from the Uganda Media Council and Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Along the route, there are several huts where hikers can rest. These include Sine Camp at 2,596 meters, Mutinda Camp at 3,588 meters, Bugata Camp, and Hunwick Camp at 3,974 meters, among others.

Mount Baker is a special part of the Rwenzori Mountains and offers a rewarding hiking experience.
