Mount Rwenzori welcomes visitors throughout the year through its different gates. These entry points are open all seasons and provide access to activities such as hiking, which is best done during the dry months when the trails are not slippery.
Visitors can also enjoy nature walks to stretch after long journeys. These walks are guided by knowledgeable tour guides who lead you to hidden spots within the mountains.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of the largest parks in Uganda, covering about 1,000 km² in the southwest of the country along the Albertine Rift Valley.
The park can be accessed by both road and air transport, leading to several gates that allow entry.
The main gates include:
- Ruboni Gate: Named after the nearby Ruboni village, this is one of the main entry points to explore the Rwenzori Mountains.
- Nyakalengija Gate: Located at the park headquarters, where hikers are briefed on the dos and don’ts before starting their trek.
- Mihunga Gate: Commonly used by visitors heading to Bwamba Valley, Lake Mahoma, and Lake Mahima, offering clear views of valleys and forests.
- Kilembe Gate: Popular with tourists interested in the old Kilembe mines and exploring the Mutinda Valley.
- Other gates include Buraro Chimp Gate, Bundibugyo Gate, Samalira Gate, Mubuku Gate, and Ihandiro Gate.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February, when trails are easier to hike.
