Primate Trekking in Mount Rwenzori – Monkeys & Chimpanzees

Primates in Mount Rwenzori are among the main attractions for tourists heading to the peaks. If you plan to see them, it is important to book your primate adventure in advance.

You also need to be physically and mentally prepared, as trekking can take between one and six hours. During the dry season, primates move around a lot in search of food, while in the wet season they settle more easily because fruits are available.

These primates feed on wild fruits, roots, stems, insects, and flowers. Rare cases have been reported where they enter nearby homes, though this is uncommon and usually linked to conflict with people.

The snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains have many primates, especially in the bamboo zone before reaching Sine Camp. Some of the species include blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and chimpanzees. Scientists say chimpanzees are our closest relatives, sharing about 98% of human DNA. They can even walk upright at times and are often seen teaching their young how to survive in the forest.

Although attacks on humans are rare, visitors should be cautious and follow the rules given by guides. Do not pluck leaves, feed the primates, throw stones, mimic them, or wander alone without your guide.

Hikers are advised to pack the right gear because the Rwenzori area is very cold. Essentials include safari boots, rain jackets, safari hats, insect repellent, waterproof clothes, first aid kits, and cameras. Avoid wearing bright-colored clothes as they attract insects.

The best time for primate trekking in the Rwenzori Mountains is during the dry season, when the routes are less muddy and visibility is clear. However, the park remains open throughout the year.
