INTERNET CONNECTIVITY IN MOUNT RWENZORI – Staying in touch with your family while on safari is now easier since there is internet in most parts of Uganda, especially in towns. Internet not only helps you communicate but also keeps you updated on world events. However, in some areas of Rwenzori, the connection can be weak. Most lodges near towns provide stable WiFi, often free of charge, especially in midrange and luxury hotels.
The higher you go in the Rwenzori Mountains, the harder it becomes to access the internet. This is common for hikers who climb towards the snow-capped Margarita Peak. In some areas, WiFi may not be available, so many visitors use mobile data from two main providers in Uganda: Airtel and MTN. To use these networks, you need a local SIM card, which your tour operator can help you get. If your phone is locked to your home country’s network, ask for assistance.
Another option is hot-spotting from your guide’s phone or buying a portable WiFi device, which can be useful in villages where the signal is weak. Keep in mind that shared lodge WiFi is not always strong or reliable for heavy internet use. It is better to inform your tour operator in advance about your internet needs so they can plan accordingly.
If WiFi does not work, you can still make calls home using a local SIM card. Your guide can show you where the network is stronger, and you can buy international bundles to make communication easier. Starlink internet is not yet available in Uganda, although nearby countries like Rwanda and Kenya have started using it.
Stay connected during your safari in the Rwenzori Mountains and share your special moments with friends and family back home.
