FLIGHTS TO RWENZORI MOUNTAINS – Flying to the Mountains of the Moon in western Uganda is one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to start your safari. Morning flights usually leave Entebbe International Airport at 7:00 am and arrive in Kasese around 10:05 am.
For those who prefer later flights, the schedule also favors them, with an afternoon flight leaving at 12:00 pm and arriving at 2:15 pm. Both options are designed to give travelers a safe and enjoyable journey.
The flight to the Rwenzori Mountains takes about one hour and forty-eight minutes and is mainly operated by Aerolink. Planes land at Kasese Airstrip, from where you continue by road. The drive takes about thirty minutes to reach the mountains.
This is also the same time it takes to access the nearby national park, which is home to many bird species, wild animals, and the impressive landforms of the Rwenzori. The mountains are famous for their highest peak, Margherita, which remains snow-capped throughout the year, giving them the name “Mountains of the Moon.”
It is recommended to book flights during the dry season when trails are easier and less affected by mud or floods. The rainy season, however, also has advantages such as fewer visitors, lower prices, and more privacy. It is also the best time for bird lovers, although you must carry rain jackets, warm clothes, boots, insect repellent, snacks, a waterproof bag, and a first aid kit.
Travelers who plan to hike the Rwenzori Mountains should pack hiking shoes, a walking stick, water, snacks, a safari hat, and insect repellent. Before starting the trek, hikers are given a briefing about the routes and conditions.
The terrain can be challenging for first-time hikers but easier for those with experience. Resting stations are available along the way, allowing you to recover before continuing. If you are too tired, you can wait at the stations or return with ease.
