Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail – Best Route to Margherita Peak

Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail - Best Route to Margherita Peak

The central circuit trail is hiked in a clockwise direction, making trekkers approach Mount Rwenzori from the east. It is one of the oldest trails that has been used for many years by hikers to reach Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley. The trail is managed by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services to ensure a smooth hiking experience.

In 1906, the Duke of Abruzzi, an Italian climber, used this trail to hike the mountain. This made it very popular and known worldwide.

The trek begins early in the morning with a briefing about the route. After making sure you have all the items you need, the lead guide starts the journey from Mihunga, past Nyabitaba. The main aim is to reach Bujuku Valley where you can rest, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the views. Before reaching the valley, you pass through Scott Elliot and the Kitandara Lakes. If you get tired, you can stop and return with a guide, or continue to the peak.

The route can be tough because of rough and deep mud in many places. This should not stop a determined hiker, but it is advised to carry boots, hiking sticks, and enough water. The sticky ground uses up a lot of energy as you pull your feet through it.

To make the hike easier, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has built huts along the trail where trekkers can rest. In 2022, a new project started to build more huts that can hold more people. The full trail usually takes 4 to 5 days, so you should pack only what is enough for you. If you cannot carry your bag, porters can be hired at a fair fee to help you during the journey. Tipping them is not compulsory, but you can give a small tip as appreciation if you wish.

The central circuit trail gives one of the best hiking experiences in the Rwenzori mountains.
