Mweya Airstrip - Gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda

Mweya Airstrip is your entry point to the land of wildlife, loved by visitors from all over the world. From here, you can see lions, zebras, buffaloes, birds, and many more. Aircraft usually land at the airfield, and from there you decide, together with your tour operator, whether to first explore Queen Elizabeth National Park or head straight to your lodge. Either way, you will enjoy the African wilderness.

This civilian airstrip is found in Kasese District, about 283 kilometers by air west of Entebbe International Airport, which is the largest airport in Uganda. Entebbe welcomes thousands of visitors every year, including tourists, business travelers, and diplomats. Mweya Airstrip receives daily flights from Murchison Falls National Park, Entebbe International Airport, and Kajjansi Airfield. A 2010 report stated that the airstrip is not managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority but is instead managed by Queen Elizabeth National Park.

After your flight, you can book a game drive through the Mweya sector of the park. From the comfort of your seat, you will see herbivores grazing and carnivores hunting, giving you a chance to witness the natural food chain. Photography and filming are allowed only if you have a media card and a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. These rules are in place for the safety of the park and the animals. If you have the documents, you are free to capture photos of the scenery, the birds, and the open skies.

Because animals are sensitive, avoid using drones or making loud noises, as these can disturb their natural behavior. Always follow park rules, such as not feeding animals, not littering, and not plucking plants. These small actions help conserve the environment.

Nearby accommodations range from budget to midrange and luxury, giving every traveler a place to rest after their flight. Some of the options include Engiri Game Lodge, Mweya Safari Lodge, Pumba Safari Cottages, Kazinga Channel Eco Lodge, Buffalo Safari Lodge, and many others. Each of these offers comfort and a chance to enjoy your safari.
