Visiting Mount Rwenzori in September - Weather, Travel & Hiking Guide

September in Mount Rwenzori is a mix of rain and sunshine. This weather helps local people plant their crops such as coffee and cotton, which improves their way of living. When you travel along the Mubende–Fort Portal road, you will see green farms and plantations spread across the mountains. Before heading to the Rwenzori, you can visit some of these farms to learn more about coffee and cotton growing and processing.

Towards the end of September, the wet season begins, but the rains are lighter than those in March. The land often dries quickly when the sun rises, giving you a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Road transport is the main option used by many tourists, especially those on a budget or those who prefer flexibility. It allows you to stop at local markets, villages, or small factories along the way. This option is cheaper and makes the journey more adventurous. The trip usually starts from Entebbe or Kampala, passing through the Mubende–Fort Portal road before reaching Mount Rwenzori. Be sure to follow traffic rules while on the road.

Air transport is also available from Entebbe International Airport, with flights landing at Kasese or Mweya airstrips. Some flights are in the morning and others in the afternoon, but they can be delayed by heavy rain or turbulence. Always confirm flight availability before booking. After landing, you will still need road transport to reach your accommodation or the park.

In September, carry your camera to capture the beautiful mountain scenery. Remember not to take anything without permission from the park authorities or local people. Hiking is a common activity, with two main options: low altitude and high altitude. Low altitude hikes stay below 4,000 meters and last two to four days. High altitude hikes go beyond 4,000 meters and can take between two and twelve days depending on the route. Along the trails, huts are available to give you rest and prepare you for the next stage of the journey.
