Detailed 10-Day Rwenzori Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Briefing and hike to Sine Camp (2,596m)

Start at Trekkers Hostel at 1,450m and hike to Sine Hut at 2,596m, a height gain of 1,146m. Fit hikers may continue to Kalalama Camp at 3,134m, which allows more time at Mutinda Camp to climb Mutinda Lookout at 3,975m.

The trail goes through Afro-Montane forest, home to many birds, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and sometimes L’Hoest monkeys. You may hear wild chimpanzees in the distance. The forest has tall trees, bamboo, flowers, moss, fungi, and vines hanging from branches.

Enock’s Falls, just 200m from Sine Hut, is a great spot for photos. Sine Camp has wooden huts set between tall forest trees on a ridge, overlooking a large waterfall below. Visitors often enjoy the campfire while talking with guides.

Day 2: Hike to Mutinda Camp (3,588m)

Trekking starts at 8:30am. Soon you enter the bamboo zone, which is steep and can be muddy and slippery in the wet season. After a climb of 551m over 1.8km, you reach Kalalama Camp at 3,147m for a short rest before heading to Mutinda.

The trail crosses streams and moss-covered waterfalls, then follows a river under giant heather trees covered with moss and lichen. The valley is often misty and full of flowers. In the afternoon, you can climb Mutinda Lookout (3,975m) for views of the Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese town, and Lake George. This climb also helps with acclimatization.

Sleep at Mutinda Camp, 3,588m.

Day 3: Hike to Bugata Camp (4,062m)

The trail is boggy, especially in the wet season. Boardwalks and careful stepping help you cross. You pass tussock grass, everlasting flowers, and giant lobelias before climbing steeply into Namusangi Valley (3,840m), which has waterfalls and views of Mutinda Peaks. The wide valley has many ups and downs before reaching Bugata Camp at 4,062m.

Day 4: Hike to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m)

Trek via Bamwanjarra Pass at 4,450m. On clear days you see the three main peaks. The trail passes bogs and thick vegetation, including lobelia and giant groundsel. Malachite sunbirds are often seen feeding here. The path has steep sections before reaching Hunwick’s Camp, set on a ridge with views of Mt Stanley, Mt Baker, Weismann’s Peak, and McConnell’s Prong.

Day 5: Summit Mt Baker (4,842m) and return to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m)

Start at 6:30am for the 4.3km climb. It takes 4–6 hours up and 2–3 hours down. The climb is steep and rocky, with some sections dropping sharply beside the glacier. Ropes are used for safety.

From the glacier, it is a short walk to the peak. In good weather, you see Margherita, Alexandria, Stanley’s Plateau, and the glaciers. Afterward, descend back across the glacier and return to Hunwick’s Camp.

Day 6: Hike to Margherita Camp (4,485m)

The trail crosses the valley floor to Lake Kitandara with its deep waters and vegetation. From here you climb Scott Elliott Pass to Margherita Camp. Meals: B, L, D.

Day 7: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m)

Wake at 2:00am for an early breakfast. Set off by 2:30am. The climb must be done early because weather often changes quickly with clouds and snow in the afternoon.

There is a strict turnaround time of 10:00am for safety. The glacier has become steeper due to melting, with sections of thin ice and caves under the surface. Guides will direct you on the safest route.

Less experienced climbers may stop at Stanley Glacier and climb a rocky outcrop near Alexandra Peak for wide views over Congo and the ridges.

After summiting Margherita Peak, descend to Bujuku Caves for the night.

Day 8: Summit Mt Speke (4,890m)

Climb Mt Speke (4,890m) and return to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m). Meals: B, L, D.

Day 9: Summit Weismann’s Peak (4,620m) and descend to Kiharo Camp (3,430m)

From Hunwick’s, climb up towards McConnell’s Prong for views of all three peaks and Scott Elliott’s Pass. Cross Oliver’s Pass (4,505m). From here, you may summit Weismann’s Peak before descending to Kiharo Camp, set in a deep valley with cliffs and thick vegetation. Meals: B, L, D.

Day 10: Descend to base camp

From Kiharo Camp, it is 12.2km to the park gate and another 2.8km to Trekkers Hostel. The walk takes 5–8 hours, so start early if you need to catch a flight or continue your journey.

The Nyamwamba Valley is mostly downhill, with waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, deep forests, and rivers. This trail took six years to open for trekkers. In 1937, explorer McConnell tried to climb here but failed. Today you can enjoy this valley as part of the descent.
