Climate & Best Time to Visit Mount Rwenzori

Climate is recorded over a long period of time, while weather changes often. If you plan to visit Mount Rwenzori, the best season is the dry one, from June to August and December to February, although the park is open all year.

The dry season offers clear skies that are good for filming and photography, and the trails are less muddy, making it easier for hikers to reach Margherita Peak. Daytime temperatures are usually between 10–15°C, while at night they can drop to 2–6°C, making the area very cold.

Rwenzori lies along the equator, giving it a tropical climate with plenty of rainfall. Visitors are advised to pack warm clothes, waterproof jackets, and bags. The fertile soils and reliable rains support farming, which helps locals earn income and improve their standard of living. The climate here is also influenced by the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which causes heavy rains during certain months.

The wet seasons are in April, May, November, and other months, with mist and frequent rains. Since rain often starts in the afternoon, hikers are advised to begin their journeys very early in the morning to avoid slippery and sticky trails. Recommended hiking months are July, August, September, October, January, and February. It is always good to consult your tour operator about the best months to visit.

During the wet season, prices are usually lower, which helps budget travelers enjoy the park. In the dry season, more visitors come, and prices are higher, but the services are well organized to handle the large number of tourists.

Mark your calendar according to the weather and climate for a successful climb in Mount Rwenzori.
