Rwenzori Trekking Routes - Kilembe, Central Circuit & Bukurungu Trails

RWENZORI TREKKING ROUTES – Trekking is a demanding activity that requires tourists who are ready and determined to keep going until they see the beautiful natural features such as landscapes, streams, wild animals, and vegetation. Each trek is led by an experienced guide assigned from the park headquarters to ensure your safety and to make sure you enjoy the trip.

The Rwenzori Mountains are found inside Rwenzori National Park, which is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This government body is in charge of collecting park fees and keeping the park safe. The main trekking routes include the Kilembe Route, Central Circuit Route, and Bukurungu Wilderness Camping Trail. These routes are the main passages to climb the Rwenzori Mountains, and some of them extend up to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where tourists can also see mountain gorillas.

The Central Circuit Route is one of the oldest and is managed by local people living near Kilembe, with support from a foreign company that runs the trekking services. It is often used by all types of visitors, including experienced hikers who wish to reach Margherita Peak. This trail passes through tropical valleys, gorges, and other landscapes. It is considered the shortest and easiest route.

The Kilembe Route is preferred by some tourists because of its new and modern facilities. However, it is longer compared to other routes. Along the way, you will see plants, animals, glaciers, and many water sources. The trek usually takes about seven to eight days, giving you time to enjoy nature. Always follow the guide’s instructions, as some areas can be dangerous with wild animals, slippery paths, and boggy ground.

The Bukurungu Route is for those who love peace and quiet. It takes you through natural areas with four beautiful lakes: Irene, Bujuku, Mughuli, and Bukurungu. This trek also takes about eight days and involves camping in the bush. Nights are often very cold, so visitors should come prepared.

For a successful hike, choose a route that matches your ability and comfort.
