Rwenzori Packing List - What to Pack for Trekking & Safaris

RWENZORI PACKING LIST – Many tourists often ask what they should pack for their safari to Mountain Rwenzori National Park. We recommend that you first prepare all the essential items you will need. Always check the rules of Uganda to know which items are allowed, which may require a fee at customs, and which are not accepted. You can also ask your tour operator for guidance before setting off to Uganda.

The items you need will depend on the activities you plan to do, such as hiking, bird-watching, cultural walks, or nature walks. Make sure to follow the rules given at the park entrance or before starting any activity. Some of the things you may need for your Rwenzori safari include:

  • Sleeping Bag: Nights in the Rwenzori are very cold, even when you sleep in huts. A sleeping bag is highly recommended. The best choice is a mummy bag, which fits the shape of the body and provides better warmth.
  • Backpack: A waterproof backpack is useful for carrying essentials such as binoculars, cameras, snacks, water, medicine, or a laptop. Choose a light bag that you can easily carry while climbing. A good bag should have compression straps to reduce the weight on your back. A body belt is also helpful for keeping important travel documents. If you cannot carry your backpack while hiking, you can hire porters.
  • Clothes: Pack clothes that provide warmth but are also light and easy to carry, such as shirts that take up less space. Since some areas of the park are very cold, bring a jacket, gloves, and long trousers to keep warm. It is best to wear earth-colored clothes because bright colors attract insects. Pack several pairs of stockings to keep your feet warm during the daily hikes, which can last more than eight days.
  • Walking Boots & First Aid Kit: Good walking boots are very important to protect your feet during long hikes. A first aid kit is also necessary to handle small injuries or emergencies along the trail.
  • Sunglasses, Binoculars, and Hat: Binoculars will help you see areas that are far or hard to reach. Sunglasses and a hat will protect your eyes and face from the sun.
